Rivers PDP Rejects Convention Outcome, Commends INEC Boycott
The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed Saturday’s national convention held in Ibadan, describing it as illegal and unenforceable.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Yowika, the party commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for boycotting the exercise, saying the commission’s action upheld the rule of law.
Yowika noted that two Federal High Court orders had stopped the convention, while only one High Court in Ibadan permitted it. Despite the conflicting rulings, the organisers proceeded to elect new national officers and dissolve some state executives.
He described the convention as a “sham” that violated subsisting court orders and expressed confidence that a competent court would nullify it.
“The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already before the Court of Appeal. We place our faith in the judiciary and urge our members to remain calm,” the statement said.
