Oluremi Tinubu condemns assault of women at Delta festival
Oluremi Tinubu has denounced the assault of women and girls during the Alue-Do festival in Ozoro, located in Isoko North LGA of Delta State.
Videos that surfaced online on Thursday showed groups of men harassing young women, forcibly tearing their clothes and subjecting them to sexual abuse during the event.
In response, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest of Omorede Sunday, identified as a community leader, alongside four other suspects over allegations of rape and assault. Authorities later announced the arrest of 11 additional suspects in connection with the incident.
Reacting via a statement shared on her X account, the First Lady said she watched the disturbing footage from Ozoro with deep concern, describing the acts as “horrific” and “barbaric,” especially as they occurred during what should have been a cultural celebration.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, she stressed that no tradition or custom should be used to justify the violation of women’s dignity and freedom.
She commended the police for the arrests made so far and urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
Addressing the victims, she encouraged them to seek medical and psychological support, while offering prayers for their healing, peace, and strength in the aftermath of the incident.
