A military aircraft with tail number NGR 931, en route from Benin to Lagos, has crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The incident occurred on Monday after Air Traffic Controllers reported losing contact with the aircraft at about 9:13 a.m.

According to the information released by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, efforts to establish radio contact with the aircraft after it disappeared proved unsuccessful.

The minister said subsequent information confirmed that the aircraft had crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda, with the wreckage located and search and rescue operations ongoing.

Preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board, bringing the total number of people aboard the aircraft to 32.

The minister noted that the control and regulation of military aircraft are outside the authority of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the civil aviation regulatory authority.

He, however, said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

Further information on the incident will be released as it becomes available.
