Greece to Ban Social Media Access for Children Under 15 from 2027

The Greek government has announced plans to prohibit children under the age of 15 from accessing social media platforms beginning January 1, 2027.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the decision followed extensive consultations with parents and young people, many of whom expressed concerns about sleep disruption, increased stress and excessive mobile phone use among children.

He noted that scientific evidence shows prolonged screen exposure negatively affects children’s brain rest and development, describing the policy as a difficult but necessary measure to protect young people.

According to him, the regulatory framework for the policy will be introduced in the summer of 2026 ahead of its implementation in 2027.

Mitsotakis acknowledged that the move may face opposition, especially from younger people, but stressed that government decisions are not always meant to be popular and must serve the public interest.

He also urged young people to reflect on the impact of social media on their well-being.
