Opposition Parties Plan Single Presidential Candidate for 2027

Opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a unified presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The decision was reached on Saturday during a national summit of opposition leaders held in Ibadan.

Key parties involved in the resolution include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by David Mark, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), chaired by Kabiru Turaki, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties said the move is part of efforts to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and prevent what they described as attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

The opposition also pledged to jointly support a consensus presidential candidate, stating that such unity is necessary to “rescue the nation” and address the concerns of citizens.

They further accused Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of bias in favour of the ruling party, calling for his removal. According to the parties, his continued stay in office could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Additionally, the opposition urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly provisions they believe could threaten the credibility of future elections.

The proposed alliance signals a potential shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as parties seek to consolidate strength ahead of the next presidential race.
