NECO expands footprint, now conducts exams in eight countries

National Examination Council says it now conducts examinations in eight countries outside Nigeria, according to its registrar, Dantani Wushishi.

Wushishi spoke on Thursday in Abuja during the council’s 25th anniversary celebration, where he reflected on the examination body’s journey and achievements since its establishment in 1999.

NECO was created in April 1999 by the military administration of Abdulsalami Abubakar before the inauguration of Olusegun Obasanjo as civilian president on May 29, 1999.

The registrar commended Obasanjo for supporting the establishment of the examination body and also praised the Niger state government for hosting the council since inception.

Wushishi also acknowledged past education ministers and former NECO registrars, including Dibu Ojerinde, for their contributions to the growth of the council.

According to him, Ojerinde introduced the prompt release of results as well as online registration and internet-based systems, which transformed the council’s operations.

He said the digital reforms improved efficiency, transparency and convenience for candidates and institutions, while also strengthening public confidence in NECO.

“Today, NECO is recognised on international platforms as a credible examination body contributing to educational integrity and mobility,” Wushishi said.

“This explains why we are currently conducting examinations in eight countries, and still counting.”

The registrar added that the council plans to strengthen examination security protocols, expand item banking systems and intensify anti-malpractice measures.

He said NECO would also improve electronic services, introduce digital certificates, strengthen partnerships with global examination bodies and invest in staff development.

Wushishi added that the council intends to broaden access to examinations for learners in underserved communities through targeted outreach programmes and support initiatives.
