Wike: Fubara’s Impeachment Was Halted on Condition He Would Not Seek Re-election

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the impeachment move against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was suspended based on an agreement that the governor would not pursue a second term in office.

Wike made the disclosure on Monday while inspecting infrastructure projects in Abuja, stating that he was not surprised by Fubara’s withdrawal from the governorship primary of the ruling party.

Fubara had pulled out of the governorship race a day before the primary election, explaining that his decision was driven by a desire to promote peace, unity and progress in Rivers State.

On May 21, Kingsley Chinda, a member of the House of Representatives and ally of Wike, emerged winner of the Rivers governorship primary.

Reacting to the development, Wike described Chinda as a suitable candidate with both legislative and executive experience needed to govern the oil-rich state.

“I’m not surprised that the governor withdrew,” Wike said.

“From the beginning, he was not supposed to obtain the nomination form because there was an understanding that the impeachment process would be dropped, while he would also stay away from seeking a second term.”

The political crisis between Wike and Fubara has lingered for months, escalating into attempts by lawmakers loyal to the FCT minister to impeach the governor.

Wike had previously declared his opposition to Fubara’s re-election ambition, accusing the governor of breaching a peace accord reportedly brokered under the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
