2027: Igbo Youths Warn Tinubu, APC Over Kanu’s Detention

Igbo youths under the All Igbo Youth Forum have cautioned President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to rely on assurances from South East governors ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that the youths—not elected officials—will determine the region’s political direction.

Speaking during a press conference in Umuahia, held to celebrate the recent Kenyan court ruling in favour of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the youths said their support for Tinubu’s re-election depends on Kanu’s release.

Over 300 youths from across the South East gathered at Awka Hall and later marched through the streets, chanting solidarity songs.

A Kenyan High Court had on June 26 declared Kanu’s 2021 abduction and extradition to Nigeria illegal, awarding him 10 million Kenyan shillings in damages. The court ruled that the action violated his rights under Kenyan and international law.

Describing the judgment as “historic,” the youths urged Tinubu to respond to calls for Kanu’s release, warning that continued detention would cost the APC Igbo support in 2027.

President of the group, Hon. Chinedum Obilor, said:
“Our governors and lawmakers are deceiving you. The youths are the real force in the South East. If you want our support, release Kanu. If not, we’ll align with any candidate who will.”

Obilor added that the youths will not be swayed by political gifts:
“If you release Kanu, you don’t need to give us rice or money. But if you don’t, we’ll vote for whoever listens to us.”

He also warned Igbo politicians against using Kanu’s name for political gains, saying the youths are prepared to vote out leaders who ignore their concerns.
