Iran offers support to Nigeria in fight against terrorism

Mahdavi Raja, Iran’s ambassador to Nigeria, says his country is ready to support Nigeria in addressing terrorism.

Raja made the remark during an interview on Arise Television, noting that Islamic groups in Nigeria maintain only spiritual and cultural relationships with Iran, rather than political ties.

His comment follows allegations by Michael Freeman, who recently accused the Iran government of backing Islamic movements in Nigeria and across West Africa to promote global terrorism.

Freeman made the claim amid protests by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, in several Nigerian states. The demonstrations were held after the reported killing of Ali Khamenei during recent United States and Israeli strikes on Tehran.

Freeman said Iran has been spreading terror through its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes and alleged that Nigeria has experienced terrorism linked to the country.

However, the IMN media forum rejected the allegation. In a statement signed by its chairman, Ammar Rajab, the group described the accusation as misleading and suggested it could be a “false-flag” narrative by Israel.

‘Iran also suffers from terrorism’

Responding to the claims, Raja said the rallies organised by Shi’ite groups and other supporters in Nigeria were expressions of grief and solidarity following the death of Iran’s leader.

He explained that the demonstrations reflected a spiritual connection among Muslims rather than political alignment with Iran.

According to the envoy, Iran has consistently condemned terrorism and remains open to collaborating with countries facing security threats.

Raja said Tehran is willing to support Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, particularly as the country continues to confront insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

He added that Iran has significant experience dealing with terrorism in its region and is ready to share that expertise with Nigeria.

Raja further emphasised that Iran itself has been a victim of terrorist attacks and has repeatedly condemned acts of terrorism in Nigeria, Africa and other parts of the world.

He said the Iranian government remains committed to cooperating with African countries to address terrorism and strengthen security across the continent.
