Ex-NEXIM Bank MD Robert Orya sentenced to 490 years over N2.4bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, Robert Orya, over a N2.4 billion fraud.

The judgment was delivered on February 5, 2026, by the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Abuja.
Orya, who headed NEXIM between 2011 and 2016, was arraigned on a 49-count charge bordering on fraud and financial misconduct involving approximately N2.4 billion. He was prosecuted by EFCC counsel Samuel Ugwuegbulam.

In her ruling, Justice F.E. Messiri found Orya guilty on all counts and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment on each charge, bringing the total sentence to 490 years.

The conviction reinforces the EFCC’s commitment to holding public office holders accountable and strengthening transparency within Nigeria’s financial and public institutions.
