Police arrest 33 suspects over Kwara church abduction
Nigerian police have arrested 33 members of a criminal gang linked to the abduction of 38 worshippers during a November attack on a church in Kwara State.
The arrests, announced on Tuesday, are part of a broader nationwide crackdown on violent crimes.
According to police spokesperson Anthony Okon Placid, the suspects carried out the November 18 attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku town. The gang is also believed to be responsible for several other crimes in the region, including kidnappings, cattle rustling, and armed robbery.
The suspects were apprehended during coordinated operations across Kwara and neighbouring Kogi State, based on both human and technical intelligence. Authorities say the ongoing operation has led to the arrest of 50 suspects since January.
Nigeria continues to face widespread security challenges, including mass kidnappings for ransom, banditry, and militant attacks. The Eruku incident heightened concerns over safety, drawing international attention and criticism.
Police say some of the arrested suspects will be charged in court soon, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang and recover additional weapons.
