IGP Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Vehicles Without Number Plates

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police (CPs) and tactical commanders across the country to immediately intensify enforcement operations against vehicles operating without number plates.

Disu gave the directive on Tuesday during a strategic conference meeting with senior police officers, expressing concern over what he described as the growing trend of motorists driving vehicles without registration numbers or with concealed number plates.

The IGP said the practice poses a serious threat to public safety and national security, stressing that it is unlawful and will no longer be tolerated by the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, an increasing number of vehicles are being driven on Nigerian roads without registration numbers, while others have their number plates deliberately concealed, defaced, covered, or altered to evade identification.

He noted that every vehicle operating on public roads must be properly registered and display approved registration numbers in line with existing laws.

Disu warned that any vehicle found without a number plate or with a tampered registration number would be stopped and subjected to the appropriate legal process.

He subsequently directed all Commissioners of Police, tactical commanders, and heads of police formations nationwide to begin immediate enforcement operations targeting unregistered vehicles and those with concealed or altered registration numbers.

The police chief said the move is aimed at strengthening security, improving accountability on the roads, and ensuring compliance with traffic and vehicle registration regulations across the country.
