Ondo Govt Suspends 27 Students Over Alleged Misconduct
The Ondo State Government has suspended 27 students from three public secondary schools in Akure over alleged acts of misconduct and indiscipline.
The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas College and CAC Grammar School.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Head of the Media Unit of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Bisi Lawani, the government said the students were sanctioned for gross misconduct and unruly behaviour, which violate the state’s Code of Conduct for public secondary schools.
According to the statement, the suspensions followed repeated warnings and consultations with school administrators aimed at addressing rising cases of indiscipline in public schools.
It noted that despite regular engagements with principals and other stakeholders on strategies to curb misconduct, some students continued to engage in unacceptable behaviour.
The ministry said the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Akindele Ige, had directed school principals, vice principals and heads of departments to strengthen supervision, improve monitoring and enforce disciplinary measures across schools.
The government expressed concern over increasing cases of bullying, fighting, truancy and the circulation of indecent videos on social media, warning that such acts disrupt the learning environment and damage the reputation of the state’s education system.
It reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against any behaviour that undermines discipline, stressing that schools are meant to promote both academic excellence and character development.
Under the suspension, the affected students have been barred from entering their schools or participating in any school-related activities until further notice.
The ministry said the disciplinary committees of the affected schools, in collaboration with the ministry, are currently reviewing the cases.
It also urged parents and guardians to take a more active role in monitoring their children’s activities and work closely with school authorities to instill discipline and good character.
The statement added that the ministry would continue routine inspections to ensure compliance with school regulations, warning that students found guilty of bullying, fighting or other serious misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established procedures.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, disciplined and conducive learning environments across public secondary schools in the state.
