54-year-old Parkinson’s patient seeks N65m for brain surgery
A 54-year-old Nigerian man, Aliyu Abdulmalik, who has been battling Parkinson’s disease for about seven years, is seeking public support to raise N65m for a Deep Brain Stimulation surgery in Istanbul, Turkey.
Abdulmalik is seeking the specialised procedure after his condition became resistant to drug treatment.

A medical treatment report issued by Atasehir Medicana International Hospital in Istanbul and dated February 10, 2025, described Abdulmalik as having “drug-resistant Parkinson’s disease,” with symptoms including difficulty in walking and rigidity.
The hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery/Neuromodulation Centre, under Prof. Atilla Yilmaz, recommended Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for him.
The hospital further stated that, considering Abdulmalik’s condition, “it has been concluded that the patient needs Deep Brain Stimulation surgery.”
The estimated cost of the procedure is $35,000.
The hospital stated that the amount covers neurological evaluations, necessary radiological and laboratory investigations, the surgery and required equipment, as well as post-operative care and programming of the implanted pulse generator.
The treatment package also includes transportation between the airport and the hospital, a 15-day stay in the hospital and hotel, and two companions.
Also, a fundraising appeal launched on Abdulmalik’s behalf said he had spent much of his youthful years involved in Islamic da’wah activities before his health condition began to affect his life.
The appeal stated, “Malam Abdul-Malik Ali (54 years), spent most of his youthful age striving in the course of Allah through various da’wah activities. For the past seven years, he’s been tested and down with Parkinson’s Disease.
“He urgently needs to undergo Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in Istanbul (Turkey)” to help him regain a more normal life.”
The fundraising target of N65m would cover the treatment, post-surgery care, accommodation, transportation and feeding during his stay in Istanbul.
As of the latest update contained in the appeal, N1,114,688.37 had been raised, leaving a shortfall of about N63.89m.
The organisers are appealing to individuals, organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute towards the cost of Abdulmalik’s treatment.
They said, “He needs the help of Allah through the Ummah of Rasul,” urging members of the public to support him in accessing the recommended treatment.
