FG begins plans to repatriate Nigerians from South Africa over xenophobic attacks

The federal government has initiated arrangements for the voluntary return of Nigerians living in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said Bola Tinubu has approved evacuation flights for citizens willing to come back home.

She explained that efforts are ongoing to compile details of affected Nigerians, noting that about 130 individuals have already registered with Nigeria’s mission in South Africa. The figure is expected to increase as Nigerian community groups continue to assist in the process.

Describing the violence as a recurring pattern, the minister alleged that some anti-foreigner groups exploit such tensions for political gain.

“Nigerian lives and businesses in South Africa must not continue to be endangered,” she said.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu added that Nigeria is engaging South African authorities to address the crisis, referencing a recently signed memorandum of understanding between both countries aimed at establishing early warning systems to protect citizens during periods of unrest.

She also urged leaders of Nigerian associations in South Africa to urgently compile lists of those willing to return but unable to afford travel costs.

According to her, the Nigerian consulate, in collaboration with the high commission in Pretoria, is gathering data to facilitate a special evacuation flight.

Prospective returnees are required to submit personal information, including passport photographs, biodata, state of origin, local government area, place of birth, current address, contact details, and evidence supporting their eligibility for repatriation. She noted that registration for the exercise is free.

TheCable reports that xenophobic attacks in South Africa have repeatedly targeted foreign nationals, including Nigerians and Ghanaians.

On Saturday, the federal government summoned Bobby Moroe over the latest incidents.
