Obi predicts credible 2027 elections, calls for production-driven economy

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed optimism that Nigeria will witness free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, stressing that the country’s challenges can be addressed through accountable leadership and a production-driven economy.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday during the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where he attributed Nigeria’s current socio-economic crisis to systemic looting rather than a lack of resources.

According to him, despite the country’s vast human and natural potential, millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

He said Nigerians are increasingly uncertain about their livelihoods, insisting that the nation is not poor but has been “looted into poverty.”

Obi also dismissed fears that credible elections may not be possible in 2027, maintaining that Nigerians would be given the opportunity to freely elect their leaders.

He expressed confidence that the next general election would be transparent and credible, urging skeptics to reconsider their doubts.

The former Anambra State governor further advocated an urgent transition from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven system capable of creating jobs and improving living conditions.

He cited increasing multidimensional poverty and youth unemployment as indicators that Nigeria’s leadership priorities need urgent redirection.

According to Obi, more than 140 million Nigerians are living in multidimensional poverty, while over 80 million young people are unemployed or underemployed.

Obi also defended his decision to join the NDC, saying his political actions have always been guided by principle rather than personal interest.

Referencing former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, he said political decisions should be driven by values and conviction.

He explained that his move to the NDC was motivated by a desire to collaborate with leaders committed to rebuilding Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
