Obafemi Hamzat Wins Lagos APC Governorship Primary, Vows People-Centred Leadership

Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos State, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election after winning the party’s primary election.

The primary, held at the APC secretariat in Ogba, Ikeja, saw Hamzat secure 657,917 votes out of 657,974 total votes cast, defeating his only challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, who received one vote. Another aspirant, Samuel Ajose, had withdrawn from the contest before the exercise.

Chairman of the APC National Governorship Primary Election Committee, retired Gen. Jon Temlong, while announcing the result, described the process as peaceful and transparent.

Temlong officially declared Hamzat winner of the primary and the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election, saying he met all constitutional requirements of the APC.

Prominent party leaders present at the declaration included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former deputy governor Femi Pedro, and members of the Governors Advisory Council (GAC), among them Ganiyu Solomon.

In his acceptance speech, Hamzat thanked President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, GAC members, and party stakeholders for their support.

He also unveiled a development blueprint tagged “My Lagos Dream,” which he said would focus on job creation, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and security.

According to Hamzat, Lagos must maintain its status as Africa’s leading commercial centre through strategic investments and governance that prioritises the welfare of residents.

He outlined four key priorities for his administration if elected governor in 2027, including improved service delivery, youth employment and industrialisation, education and skills development, as well as better healthcare, water access, and security.

Hamzat pledged inclusive governance, assuring residents across different communities and occupations that their interests would be protected.

He said traders, transport workers, artisans, youths, and business owners would all benefit from policies aimed at improving livelihoods and creating a safer environment for investment.

The APC candidate also promised to sustain and expand the developmental agenda introduced by President Tinubu and successive APC administrations in Lagos.

Citing his experience in government, Hamzat highlighted projects executed during his tenure, including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Lagos Blue and Red rail lines, Adiyan Waterworks, and several road and bridge projects.

Describing the 2027 election as pivotal to the future of Lagos and Nigeria, Hamzat expressed confidence that, with public support, the state would continue on a path of growth and transformation.
