Obasanjo, Kwankwaso hold closed-door meeting in Kano

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, held what was described as “constructive discussions” during a meeting in Kano.

The meeting took place on Thursday during Obasanjo’s official visit to Kano State, according to a statement shared on Friday by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan.

Hassan said Kwankwaso, who paid a courtesy visit to the former president at his temporary residence in Kano, was accompanied by Aminu Gwarzo, the NDC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 Kano governorship election and a former deputy governor of the state.

He said the visit created an opportunity for cordial interactions and productive discussions between the two political figures.

Obasanjo is widely regarded as an ally of Peter Obi, the NDC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, the former military head of state publicly endorsed Obi over then-candidates Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a leader with broad national appeal and strong political support across the country.

Obi eventually finished third in the 2023 presidential poll, behind Atiku and eventual winner Tinubu.

Photos released after the meeting showed Obasanjo and Kwankwaso in discussion during the former president’s visit to Kano.
