Osun LG Elections: Police Warn of High Security Threats, Advise Suspension
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised alarm over potential security threats linked to the forthcoming Local Government elections in Osun State. Citing credible intelligence reports, the police have urged the state government to immediately suspend the elections to prevent possible violence and unrest.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF revealed that intelligence gathered from multiple sources indicates that various political groups and interest parties are mobilizing to disrupt public peace. The police warned that proceeding with the elections under such volatile conditions could lead to widespread disorder, endangering lives and property.
“The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned Local Government elections proceed in Osun State. Various groups, including political elements and other interest parties, are mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine the democratic order,” the statement read.
The police assured that security agencies are fully prepared to maintain law and order. However, they emphasized that suspending the elections would be the most effective measure to avert potential chaos.
Legal Uncertainty Surrounding Elections
Beyond security concerns, the NPF also pointed to legal issues surrounding the elections. According to the police, a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal on February 22, 2025, has nullified a previous Federal High Court decision, raising questions about the legal basis of the planned elections.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has reportedly provided legal clarification on the matter, further reinforcing the view that the elections lack a firm legal foundation.
Call for Restraint
In light of these security and legal complexities, the NPF has advised the Osun State Government to reconsider its stance on the elections. The police also called on political parties and stakeholders to act with restraint and prioritize public safety.
“The NPF reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic processes are upheld in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.
