Finnish Court Jails Simon Ekpa for Terrorism Crimes
The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra agitator, to six years in prison for terrorism offences.
In a ruling on Monday, the court found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorism, participating in the activities of a terrorist group, supplying weapons and explosives, and encouraging his followers on social media to commit crimes in Nigeria’s south-east.
The judges also convicted him of aggravated tax fraud and violating provisions of the Attorneys Act.
Ekpa, a self-proclaimed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, was appointed as lead broadcaster of Radio Biafra after Kanu’s arrest in 2021 but was later dismissed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He went on to form a splinter group, using social media to enforce sit-at-home directives and call for attacks on security forces.
Arrested in Finland in November 2024, Ekpa was accused of spreading terrorist propaganda online. In March 2025, the Nigerian government designated him a “terrorism financier.”
