Court adjourns trial of Anthony Joshua’s driver to February 25

A magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode appeared before the court on Tuesday for the continuation of his trial.
The Ogun State Police Command had on January 2 filed a four count charge against him, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
The presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, had earlier granted Kayode bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. He was remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case was initially adjourned to January 20 for trial.
At the resumed hearing, Richard Nigiwe, the prosecuting counsel, informed the court that three out of the four prosecution witnesses were present. The witnesses were officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, also known as the Vehicle Inspection Office.
Nigiwe requested an adjournment to March to enable the prosecution duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
However, defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the request, arguing that since the witnesses were already in court, the trial should proceed.
Ruling on the matter, Magistrate Somefun adjourned the case to February 25 to allow the prosecution seek legal advice. She also ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the state attorney general.
