Tinubu appoints Disu New IGP, Egbetokun forced to resign

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector General of Police, with immediate effect.

The announcement was made by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision follows the resignation of the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

According to the statement, the president acknowledged Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and commended his professionalism and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security framework during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four year term expected to end in June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act 2020.

Onanuga noted that Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership, saying he is expected to provide steady direction for the police at a critical time.

He added that the president will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate of Nigeria for confirmation.

The president also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security, strengthening institutions, and ensuring the police remain professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out their constitutional duties.
