Many Feared Dead, Including Soldiers, as Bandits Attack Kwara Community

Many people are feared dead following a fresh bandit attack on Kemanji community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Monday.

The attack, which reportedly occurred around 3:00 a.m., was said to have been preceded by a threat letter allegedly sent to the community, heightening tension among residents days before the incident.

Sources said the assailants struck under the cover of darkness, firing gunshots indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee for safety.

Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, were said to have responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a gun battle that lasted until about 5:00 a.m.

A local source noted that the attackers allegedly launched an explosive device at a military camp upon arrival, causing significant damage before advancing further into the community.

Casualties were recorded among security personnel during the exchange of fire, with some soldiers reportedly killed while attempting to repel the attack. A member of the local vigilante group was also said to have been shot, though his condition remains unclear.

Residents described the situation as tragic, noting that the community has been thrown into panic, with many villagers fleeing their homes. The exact number of casualties had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The attackers were also reported to have made away with military patrol vehicles and motorcycles before fleeing the scene.

In the aftermath, youths in the area called for a temporary suspension of political activities, describing the incident as a period of collective mourning.

They paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifice in defending the community.

Reacting to the development, a community leader criticised the worsening insecurity in the area and urged political and traditional leaders to take decisive action. He stressed the need for accountability, insisting that leaders who fail to protect their people should step aside.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the police were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson did not respond to calls or messages as of press time.

The attack adds to a growing wave of violence in Kaiama LGA. Earlier in April, bandits reportedly killed five members of the National Forest Guard in Nuku village and destroyed security patrol vehicles. In February, attacks on Woro and Nuku communities reportedly left over 200 residents dead, with dozens abducted, including women and children.
