Osun State Removes Monarch

The Osun State Government has removed Oba Gbenga Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area, with immediate effect. Announcing the decision, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said it followed due consultations, legal review, and approval by the State Executive Council, in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law and other relevant regulations.

The government explained that the action was necessitated by the monarch’s conviction in the United States over COVID-19-related fraud, for which he is currently serving a prison sentence. As a result, all instruments of authority, including his staff of office, have been withdrawn, effectively declaring the Apetumodu stool vacant. Authorities stressed that the move reflects the state’s commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional institutions and enforcing due process.

Looking ahead, the government assured that the process of selecting a new monarch will commence in accordance with customary and legal procedures, while security agencies have been directed to maintain peace. The development follows growing tension in Ipetumodu, where stakeholders, including the Aribile and Fagbemokun ruling houses and kingmakers, had earlier urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to declare the stool vacant and begin the succession process.
