US opens applications for education support programme for Nigerian students
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026 edition of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme (OFP), aimed at supporting outstanding Nigerian students seeking higher education opportunities in the United States.
According to a notice published by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
The programme, coordinated by EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Mission, is designed to assist academically talented Nigerian students who demonstrate strong leadership potential and a desire to pursue tertiary education in the United States.
The mission said the initiative seeks to expand access to U.S. higher education while promoting mutual economic and educational interests between Nigeria and the United States.
It noted that the 2026 cohort is aligned with the Freedom250 celebration, which commemorates 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values.
According to the statement, the programme will help prepare globally competitive talents whose skills align with U.S. economic and strategic priorities.
The mission also stressed that the initiative supports secure and lawful participation in the American education system, ensuring beneficiaries understand student visa requirements and comply fully with U.S. immigration regulations.
Priority consideration will be given to students with exceptional academic records and career interests in strategic fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other emerging technologies.
The Opportunity Fund Programme provides financial assistance for key application expenses, including standardised test fees, application charges and other related costs often required during the admission process.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership ability, research potential, notable achievements, and a clear intention to pursue higher education in the United States. Candidates are also expected to show a commitment to responsible participation in U.S. exchange and educational programmes.
The mission emphasised that successful applicants would be required to maintain high ethical standards, including strict compliance with U.S. visa regulations and programme guidelines.
Interested candidates are expected to submit a completed application form, academic transcripts, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, leadership and research experience, as well as other supporting documents before the June 30 deadline.
The EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme has over the years supported talented but financially disadvantaged students by covering the upfront costs associated with applying to U.S. colleges and universities.
