Students, others feared dead as three-storey hostel collapses in Anambra
An unconfirmed number of people, including students, are feared dead after a three-storey hostel collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly collapsed late on Sunday, July 26, trapping several occupants under the rubble.
The number of casualties remains unknown as of the time of filing this report, although some injured victims have reportedly been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, said rescue operations were ongoing.
Ikenga said the operation was being conducted by a joint security team comprising the police, the State Fire Service and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
He said the building was located beside Tonimas Filling Station in Amokpala, Oko, adding that some occupants were trapped beneath the rubble following the late-night collapse.
The police spokesperson assured that rescue efforts would continue as authorities work to determine the number of casualties and rescue those still trapped.
