Edo Assembly Speaker Resigns Amid Impeachment Threat

Blessing Agbebaku, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has resigned from his position amid alleged moves by lawmakers to impeach him.

Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the development in a Facebook post on Monday, saying further details would be released later.

“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS. DETAILS LATER,” she wrote.

Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko Edo II Constituency, was reportedly sworn in as the new Speaker of the assembly.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker of the eighth assembly in June 2023.

His leadership came under pressure in May 2024 after he suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to remove him and other principal officers.

At the time, Agbebaku reportedly alleged that external forces were behind the move and claimed charms and ritual items had been brought into the assembly complex.

The suspended lawmakers, who were said to be allies of Philip Shaibu, former deputy governor of the state and an associate of Adams Oshiomhole, denied the allegations and described their suspension as politically motivated.

Agbebaku later defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in May 2025.

His defection came after some APC figures reportedly demanded his removal, citing his PDP background, previous campaign activities and their preference for an “original” APC member from his zone to lead the assembly.

However, Governor Monday Okpebholo reportedly supported Agbebaku’s continued leadership, citing his loyalty and contribution to advancing the administration’s agenda.

The latest resignation followed renewed reports of an impeachment move against the Speaker.
