Kwara politics: Senator Saliu Mustapha resigns from APC
Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State.
Mustapha announced his resignation in a statement on Thursday, saying the decision followed weeks of consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, constituents and other well-meaning Kwarans.
The senator said recent developments within the APC in Kwara no longer sufficiently aligned with his political convictions and the aspirations of the people he represents.
He described the decision as difficult, noting that extensive consultations and engagements preceded his departure from the ruling party.
Mustapha said his political philosophy remained centred on people, purpose and service, adding that he considered it necessary to chart a new course when a political platform no longer reflected those values.
“As a politician, I have always believed that politics must be about people, principles and purpose,” he said.
“Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course.”
The senator, popularly known as Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, thanked the APC leadership, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained during his time in the party.
He, however, assured his constituents and supporters that his resignation would not affect his commitment to serving the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.
“To my constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond, I assure you that while my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” he said.
Mustapha added that he remained committed to serving the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.
His resignation comes amid changing political alignments in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
