Saraki: It’s unfair to link Tinubu to my prosecution under Buhari

Bukola Saraki has said it is unjust to associate President Bola Tinubu with his prosecution during the administration of the late Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Saraki dismissed claims that Tinubu wielded influence in Buhari’s government or played any role in the legal actions against him.

In September 2015, the Code of Conduct Bureau filed charges of false asset declaration against Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Reflecting on the episode, the former senate president said it would be unfair to accuse Tinubu of involvement in his ordeal, stressing that his actions at the time were guided by what he believed to be in the national interest.

“It is not fair on President Bola Tinubu because, as we all know, during the Buhari administration, he did not wield the kind of influence people now claim,” Saraki said.

“My concern then was to act in the best interest of the country as senate president, but those actions led to my prosecution.”

He added that Tinubu was not among those responsible for decisions leading to his trial, including matters relating to the Code of Conduct case, the Offa robbery investigation, and allegations of National Assembly forgery, noting that those were handled by the executive arm of government.
