Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP, hints at political realignment

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the platform on which he contested the 2023 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kwankwaso said his resignation takes immediate effect.

The former minister of defence, who also served as the party’s national leader, described the decision as difficult, expressing appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.

“I express my profound gratitude for the honour of serving as the party’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections. This was not an easy decision to make.”

Kwankwaso attributed his exit to the current political climate, noting that it necessitated a strategic realignment.

He said he plans to align with another political platform that offers a better opportunity to influence the country’s direction.

“Considering the trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, I find it necessary to identify with another platform that presents the best chance to effect meaningful change,” he added.

He thanked the party’s national chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, members of the national working committee, board of trustees, and the national executive committee for their support during his time in the party.

Kwankwaso also appreciated party leaders across various levels, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, for their commitment.

He reaffirmed his readiness to continue working with political stakeholders towards national development.

“We shall continue to collaborate in pursuit of a more prosperous future for Nigeria,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya movement had indicated on Saturday that Kwankwaso is expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday.
