Seun Kuti recalls how his mother hid cannabis in bread for Fela in detention

Seun Kuti has shared a childhood story about how his late mother, Fehintola Anikulapo-Kuti, once concealed cannabis inside a loaf of bread and asked him to deliver it to his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, while he was in detention.

In a recent interview, the Afrobeat musician said his father was being held at the Federal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Alagbon, Lagos, at the time.

Seun explained that he had no idea he was carrying contraband during the visit.

He recalled that his mother bought bread for the visit and secretly hid “Igbo” inside it, instructing him to hand it over to his father when they arrived.

According to him, he was about eight or nine years old at the time and unaware of what was happening. He simply delivered the bread as told.

He added that his sister later revealed the truth on their way home, noting that their mother had informed her but deliberately kept him in the dark to avoid any slip-up with authorities.

Seun also said he visited his father in several detention facilities during his childhood, including Ikoyi Prison, Kirikiri Prison, Panti, and Alagbon.
