Shettima Leads Nigerian Delegation to Benin for Wadagni’s Inauguration

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Cotonou, the commercial hub of Benin Republic, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of President-elect Romuald Wadagni.

Wadagni, a former finance minister of Benin Republic, emerged victorious in the country’s April 12 presidential election, signalling a major political transition in the West African nation.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Presidential Palace in Cotonou.

According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson to the vice-president, the Nigerian delegation joined other African leaders, diplomats, and international dignitaries attending the ceremony.

The statement noted that Shettima’s visit reflects the strong diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, especially in areas such as trade, border cooperation, and regional security.

Both countries are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and have maintained close collaboration on regional integration and security matters.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in Cotonou ahead of the inauguration, with reports indicating that Nigerian troops have been deployed to strategic locations as part of regional security efforts.

According to counterinsurgency publication Zagazola Makama, surveillance and patrols have been intensified around key routes, government institutions, strategic facilities, and the Presidential Palace to ensure a smooth and secure event.

The inauguration is expected to attract several heads of government and international delegations from across Africa and beyond.

Activities lined up for the event include official state ceremonies, the transfer of presidential insignia, and a ceremonial procession linked to activities in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic’s administrative capital.

Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after the inauguration ceremonies conclude.
