Gumi Denies Claim of Being Target of US Attack
Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed as fake a viral report alleging that he claimed to be a target of a United States attack on Nigerian soil.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, Gumi clarified that he never made such a statement and never considered himself a target of any US operation.
He said the report misrepresented his remarks and urged the public to disregard it.
“There is fake news going viral claiming that I said I was targeted by a US attack on Nigerian soil. I never said so and never thought of such a possibility,” he stated.
Gumi explained that the confusion likely arose from a lecture he delivered at a mosque, where he narrated a past security incident involving Boko Haram.
According to him, he had only referenced an incident in August 2012 when he was informed that Boko Haram planned to eliminate him, an attempt that failed after the attackers were killed by an explosion from their own device near his residence.
The cleric said he is currently safe and living peacefully with his family, adding that media organisations that published the report should retract it and apologise.
