US, Israel Launch Airstrikes on Iran

The United States and Israel have carried out coordinated missile strikes on Iran in what Israeli officials described as a “pre-emptive” operation.

Initial reports suggested the attack was conducted solely by Israel, but Fox News later reported that the United States also participated, describing the strikes as a joint US-Israeli mission.

In a statement on Saturday, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said the operation was aimed at eliminating threats against the country.

Katz also declared a “special and permanent state of emergency” nationwide, warning that Iran could retaliate with drones and ballistic missiles.

Iranian state media reported several explosions in Tehran, the capital city. At least three blasts were heard in the downtown area, with reports indicating that missiles struck the Republic district of the city.

Further explosions were later reported in the northern and eastern parts of Tehran.

As of the time of filing this report, Iranian authorities had not released official information on possible casualties or the extent of damage caused by the strikes.

In Israel, warning sirens sounded in several areas as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Home Front Command issued a proactive alert to residents.

Civilians were advised to identify the nearest protected shelters and avoid unnecessary travel due to the prevailing security situation.

The military explained that the alert was issued to prepare the public for the possibility of missile attacks on Israeli territory. However, authorities said there was no immediate directive for residents to take shelter.

The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Negotiations between both countries were expected to continue next week, although US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was not satisfied with the progress of the talks, despite reports that Iran had made some concessions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned about what he considers the growing threat posed by Iran’s ballistic missile programme.

He has also strongly opposed any agreement that addresses Iran’s nuclear activities without also tackling its missile capabilities.
