Nationwide Protest: IGP confirms violent protest in 10 States
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has confirmed violent protests in 10 major states, including FCT Abuja, describing the events as a mass uprising and looting rather than peaceful protests.
He disclosed this at a media briefing in Abuja, revealing widespread destruction in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, and Jigawa.
galaxytv reports that Egbetokun stated that police stations have been destroyed, and there have been attempts to take over government houses, loot government infrastructure, and destroy private property.
He emphasized that the police had warned of potential violence and advised protesters to stage their demonstrations in confined locations to ensure peaceful conduct.
IGP said Despite their efforts, the police recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on security personnel, resulting in one death and several injuries.
IGP Egbetokun also noted that terror elements might take advantage of the protests to infiltrate the crowd with suicide bombers, citing an incident in Lagos where an improvised explosive device was rendered safe.
The police boss advised law-abiding citizens to heed warnings from security agencies and remain calm, assuring that the Nigeria Police Force is fully mobilized to respond to any further threats to public safety and order.
He warned groups hiding under the guise of constitutional rights to destabilize the country, emphasizing the importance of obeying the laws and respecting the rights of other citizens.
