Congo Sentences 170 Convicted Armed Robbers to Death by Firing Squad
The Congolese government is executing 102 inmates on death row who were convicted of armed robbery, locally known as “Kulunas” or “urban bandits.”
The country’s Minister of Justice, Constant Mutamba, disclosed this in a statement to the Associated Press on Sunday.
Mr Mutamba stated that the 102 inmates were aged between 18 and 35 years old, 45 of whom were executed in late December 2024, while the remaining 57 were executed within the last 48 hours.
According to the minister, the remaining 70 convicts were flown on Sunday to Angenga prison in the northern Mongala province in Kinshasa, where the 102 inmates were earlier executed.

Mr Mutamba stated that the “third batch will be executed, so the first two have already undergone the measure of execution by the death penalty.”
He, however, failed to mention the day the execution of the remaining 70 inmates will take place, nor did he speak about the status of the inmates.
