NASU, SSANU to begin indefinite strike over stalled talks with FG

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting May 1.

In a letter dated April 30 and addressed to the minister of education, Tunji Alausa, the unions said the industrial action will take effect from midnight.

The notice, signed by NASU general secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU president Mohammed Ibrahim, attributed the decision to the federal government’s failure to conclude ongoing renegotiations and present a new offer on allowances.

Although the unions acknowledged the withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 percent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance, they said no replacement offer had been made.

“While the withdrawal of the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance is noted, no new offer has been presented to replace the 30 percent allowances contained in the withdrawn circular,” the letter stated.

The unions also expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations, describing it as slow and below expectations.

They noted that members had earlier mandated their leadership to take action if talks were not finalised by April 30.

“With no agreement reached as of April 30, 2026, and in the absence of a new offer, the strike will commence at 12:00 am on May 1, 2026,” the statement read.

Describing the action as unavoidable, NASU and SSANU accused the government of failing to prevent the crisis through meaningful engagement.

“All members are hereby directed to commence a total and comprehensive strike from Friday, May 1, 2026,” the unions added.
