Obi Pledges to End Governance Abuse, Prioritise Education, Healthcare if Elected President

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to tackle abuse in governance, improve the quality of life of Nigerians, and foster national unity if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the commitment in a post on X on Wednesday, where he outlined key elements of his proposed roadmap for national development.

He said his administration would focus on addressing governance challenges while promoting unity, peace, sustained progress, and prosperity.

“When I decided to contest for the office of President of Nigeria, I pledged to place Nigeria on the path of unity and national transformation,” Obi said.

“Now, as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, I will, in the coming weeks and months, provide insights into the roadmap that I am confident will help curb abuse in government, halt the decline in the quality of life of Nigerians at all levels, and usher in an era of unity, peace, sustained progress, and prosperity.”

According to him, the proposed agenda is built on the principles of unity, inclusion, social justice, equity, and the freedom of every Nigerian to pursue legitimate aspirations.

Obi identified education and healthcare reforms as critical pillars of his administration, stressing that human capital development remains the foundation for national growth.

He described a well-developed workforce as essential for economic expansion, improved public services, and overall national progress.

As part of his education agenda, Obi said his government would establish a special task force to significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.

He also promised to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to drive industrialisation and equip young Nigerians with practical skills.

The former Anambra State governor said TVET institutions would receive improved funding and equipment through partnerships involving government, the private sector, and faith-based organisations. He added that the initiative would promote apprenticeship programmes modelled after Germany’s dual education system.

Obi further expressed concern over the country’s shortage of skilled labour, noting that despite high unemployment, many Nigerian entrepreneurs are forced to establish businesses outside the country because of the lack of qualified workers.

He also pledged to promote character and civic education to instil leadership, trust, entrepreneurship, and shared national values among citizens. According to him, strengthening these values is essential to building a more united and prosperous Nigeria.
