Please Free Our Husband, We Campaigned for You, El-Rufai’s Wives Beg Tinubu
The wives of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure their husband is granted his constitutional rights as he faces prosecution.
Speaking in Abuja, Asiya El-Rufai, alongside Aichatou El-Rufai, said the family was not asking the president to interfere with the judicial process but to ensure El-Rufai receives his constitutional rights, including access to medical care, family members, lawyers and bail on reasonable terms.
Addressing Tinubu, Asiya recalled that she and her husband campaigned for him during the 2023 presidential election.
“Mr. President, I campaigned for you. My husband stood by your side. Is this what our family deserves?” she asked, urging the president to intervene.
Asiya alleged that El-Rufai, who suffers from high blood pressure and fluctuating blood sugar levels, has been denied adequate medical care. She added that restrictions on access to his doctors, lawyers and family members have made it difficult for him to prepare his defence and have left the family traumatised.
She appealed for El-Rufai to be granted bail on reasonable terms pending the conclusion of his trial, insisting the family only seeks the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
The appeal follows the arrest of Professor Bello Abubakar, El-Rufai’s personal physician, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations that he and the former governor abused official privileges and violated a court order relating to El-Rufai’s medical consultation, TheCable reports.
