Atiku Accuses Tinubu of Undermining Democracy Over NDC Registration Case
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to weaken Nigeria’s opposition and steer the country towards a one party state following the latest court decision on the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Atiku’s reaction followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside its earlier December 10, 2025 judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.
Justice Isah Dashen ruled that the Peace Movement Party should have been joined in the suit because the outcome could affect its interests. The court ordered a return to the status quo and directed that the matter be heard afresh with all necessary parties.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Atiku said the ruling exposed what he described as the “true colours” of the Tinubu administration, alleging that it was working to undermine democratic competition ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, free, fair and credible elections are the foundation of democracy, warning that any attempt to limit citizens’ choices could threaten the nation’s stability.
He accused Tinubu of abandoning the democratic principles he championed during the military era, arguing that the president’s actions contradict his public commitment to credible elections.
Atiku also said President Tinubu should emulate former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, whom he claimed did not seek to weaken opposition parties despite political rivalry.
“If you are truly popular and your policies have improved the lives of Nigerians, you should not fear free and fair competition,” Atiku said.
The former vice president further urged the judiciary to remain independent and resist political pressure, warning that public confidence in the courts could be eroded if judges fail to uphold the rule of law.
