Tinubu, Kagame discuss stronger Nigeria-Rwanda ties, visa-free travel for citizens
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with Paul Kagame in Kigali to discuss ways of strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Rwanda, including a possible reciprocal visa-free arrangement for Rwandan citizens.
The meeting took place at the presidential villa in Kigali during Tinubu’s visit to Rwanda for the Africa CEO Forum , according to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
During the talks, Tinubu said Nigeria would seriously consider matching Rwanda’s policy that allows citizens of African Union member states to stay in the country visa-free for up to 30 days. The move, he said, aligns with the spirit of African integration and pan-African cooperation.
Both leaders also discussed efforts to deepen trade relations through the African Continental Free Trade Area , with emphasis on removing barriers to trade and improving movement across borders to support economic growth.
Tinubu and Kagame further agreed on reviving the Joint Permanent Ministerial Commission (JPMC), a bilateral framework established in 2021 to strengthen cooperation between both countries. Nigeria is expected to host the next meeting of the commission.
The discussions also covered the implementation of pending memoranda of understanding in sectors such as tourism, anti-corruption, and the fight against illicit drugs.
Additionally, Nigeria is exploring improved continental trade links through aviation partnerships. While an air cargo corridor has already been established with Uganda Airlines , talks are reportedly ongoing with RwandAir to expand export opportunities for Nigerian businesses across Africa.
