Gani Adams alleges terrorists infiltrated 40 LGAs in South-West

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised concerns over growing insecurity in the South-West, claiming that terrorists have infiltrated at least 40 local government areas across the region.

Speaking in an interview, Adams said the security threat has worsened over the past two years, during which he repeatedly warned authorities about the influx of armed groups into the geopolitical zone.

According to him, the South-West has 137 local government areas, with intelligence reports allegedly showing significant terrorist presence in no fewer than 40 councils.

Adams said his group deliberately withheld sensitive information, believing collaboration with state governments would produce better security outcomes than engaging law enforcement agencies alone.

He expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of response from governors in the region despite efforts to establish partnerships, noting that his organisation possesses security structures across Yorubaland and parts of northern Nigeria.

He added that, in the absence of official cooperation, public warnings through the media became one of the few available options to alert residents about possible attacks in infiltrated states.

Reacting to recent reports of hunters attempting to confront kidnappers responsible for the abduction of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area, Adams said local hunters have limited operational powers but still play a role in community security.

He called for coordinated efforts among factions of the Oodua Peoples Congress and other regional groups to tackle insecurity in the South-West.

According to him, intelligence gathering, local knowledge, language skills, and spiritual support are all important components in combating criminal activities, stressing that security extends beyond the use of sophisticated weapons.

The concerns follow attacks carried out on May 15 by armed men on schools and surrounding communities in Oriire LGA of Oyo State, where pupils, students, and teachers were abducted.

The affected schools reportedly included Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A Primary School in Esin Ele, all located within the Ogbomoso axis.

Recent security breaches have also been recorded in parts of Ondo State and other South-West communities, heightening concerns over worsening insecurity in the region.
