Family, colleagues bid farewell to teacher killed in Ogbomoso school attack

Family members, colleagues, and sympathisers on Friday gathered in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, to bid farewell to Joel Adesiyan, one of the teachers killed during last week’s attack on schools in the area.

The burial service took place at Ayegun Baptist Church, Ogbomoso, where mourners paid their final respects amid grief and emotional scenes.

Photos from the ceremony, shared by Punch, showed sympathisers consoling Adesiyan’s family as his remains were brought into the church for the funeral rites.

The attack occurred on April 15 when gunmen riding motorcycles stormed communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso. During the invasion, dozens of students and seven teachers were abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

Adesiyan, an assistant headmaster at Community High School, alongside a commercial motorcyclist, was shot dead during the assault.

Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that seven teachers were kidnapped in the raid, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed in captivity.

A disturbing video that surfaced on Monday reportedly showed Oyedokun being beheaded after being tied to a tree, sparking outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of the remaining abducted victims.

Although reports circulated on Thursday claiming the kidnapped victims had regained freedom, both the Oyo State Government and the police dismissed the claims, insisting the information was false.
